HIPPODROME / EL HIPODROMO

It was built by the Septimus severus in 203 A.D.Constantin the great reconstructed and enlarged.
Fue construido por Septimus Severus en el año 203 D.C.. Constantino el Grande lo reconstruyó y agrandó.
Chariot races were very popular in the Roman Empire, especially in its western provinces. In the Byzantine period chariot racing remained the only sport that survived from classical antiquity as other sport activities and games declined after the 4th century and gladiator games and wild animal fights were three structures intended for the races.
Las Carreras de Carruajes eran muy populares en el Imperio Romano especialmente en las provincias orientales. Durante el periodo Bizantino las Carreras de Carruajes permanecieron como el único deporte que sobrevivió de los clásicos antiguos ya que otras actividades deportivas y juegos como los gladiadores y peleas de animales cedieron sus estructuras a las carreras de carruajes antes del siglo 4to.
The hippodrome was about 480m long and 120 m wide.
El Hipódromo tiene alrededor de 480 metros de largo por 120 metros de ancho.

The central part of the hippodrome was called ‘spina’ and races took place around the Spina. There were obelisks and statutes on the spina. Today only three of them exist. The Egyptian obelisk, the Serpent column from Apollo temple in Delphi and Constantine column.
La Parte Central del Hipódromo es llamada la “Espina” y las carreras tomaban lugar alrededor de la espina. Allí estaban ubicados obeliscos y estatuas. Hoy en día solo existen tres de ellos, el Obelisco Egipcio, La Columna de Serpiente proveniente del templo de Apolo en Delfos y la Columna de Constantino.
The hippodrome was destroyed by the 4th Latin crusaders in 1204. After the re-conquer of the city Chariot races were never revived and by the 15th century it was in ruins.
El Hipódromo fue destruido por la 4ta cruzada latina en 1204. Luego de la reconquista de la ciudad, las carreras de carruajes no se reanudaron y para el siglo 15 solo quedaban ruinas.
It was used as a horse training area by the Ottomans. And then arena was filled with debris during the construction of İbrahim Paşa palace which is museum today.
Era utilizado como área de entrenamiento de caballos por los otomanos y la arena se abastecía de los restos de la construcción del palacio del General Ibrahim, el cual hoy en día es un museo.

Hippodrome is located between Blue mosque and Hagia Sofia.
El Hipódromo está ubicado entre la Mezquita Azul y Hagia Sofía.
